If you’re a late gift-giver, or want to exchange a gift you received this holiday season — you may be in luck.
The day after Christmas has recently become a prime sales day, as stores look to get rid of unsold holiday merchandise. It also allows shoppers to score deals before the end of the year.
It’s also important to be aware of what you’re planning to buy, as some items are priced higher after the holidays.
With Black Friday season stretched out longer than ever this year during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the time for holiday shopping feels even longer, and sales will continue well past Christmas, according to DealNews.com.
Here is some guidance from the experts at DealNews.com about what to buy when shopping after Christmas.
Discounts on holiday decor often dominate post-Christmas sales because retailers want to clean out their stock. You won’t be able to use those holiday items for very long, if at all, this year, but you can still stock up in preparation for 2021.
DealNews.com experts said they expect to see discounts on holiday decor items of up to 75% off at different stores. Last year, the shopping experts said there were strands of lights and individual ornaments for as little as $4 each. Artificial trees dropped as low as $13, while inflatable decor hit a low of $14.
Though sales on these items should last until after the start of the new year, remember that the selection will diminish pretty quickly. While waiting longer after Christmas could mean deeper discounts, you’ll have far less to choose from.
In the week after Christmas last year, DealNews.com reported about 26% of deals were on clothing and accessories. One of the better offers was at Joe’s New Balance Outlet, where shoppers could take an extra 30% off final markdowns.
Strong sales were also seen at stores like Banana Republic Factory, which took an extra 50% off clearance items, while Men’s Wearhouse knocked off an extra 40% off its clearance items. Gap hosted its Great Gap Sale, which took up to 75% off, as well as an extra 60% off its items.
DealNews.com said to look for items like wool socks to be as little as $3, men’s polo shirts for $5, winter gloves for $6, and sweaters for $10.
Don’t worry if you don’t find the video game deals you want before Christmas. DealNews.com said last year, more than half of the video game deals were available the week after Christmas.
The deals usually go beyond individual titles too. PC gamers can keep an eye out for the Steam Winter Sale, which usually begins a few days before Christmas and runs through early January. Also, watch for stores like Target to take an extra 25% off select video games, and for Nintendo to have another Christmas sale like last year, which took up to 90% off in its eShop.
Last year saw great deals on a wide variety of electronics, including an LG 65″ HDR UHD 4K smart TV for $460. Other deals last year included an Anker portable Bluetooth speaker for just $11 and a Ring Video Doorbell 2 for $99.
According to DealNews.com, there are a few items to stay away from in December just after Christmas. If you can wait out the extra week until January, shopping experts say you will see better deals on exercise equipment, bedding and winter clothing.
Last year, there was a 49% increase in exercise deals from December 2019 to January 2020, and it will likely be the same for this year, according to DealNews.com. Watch out for sales in the first month of the new year to find the best deals on bedding. Winter clothing will have similar deals, as retailers try to clear out stock of cold-weather gear to make room for spring apparel.
